A Service of Tenebrae (“darkness”)
The Gospel According to John
Immanuel's Good Friday service is also in the evening, allowing more people to attend than the traditional noon services did. It also allows us to have a full choir. This is a rather dramatic service. As the last words of Jesus from the cross are heard, candles on a black-draped candelabrum are extinguished. At the conclusion of the service the sanctuary is dark except for the Christ candle and worshipers leave in silence. It is an acute experience of the suffering wrought by human sin, and a call to forgiveness and hope.
